The new Phantom or “Phantom I” represented a modernization of the brilliant Silver Ghost, and carried Rolls-Royce forward with a most versatile and capable chassis, adaptable to any number of uses. Originally bodied as a limousine, chassis 84FH was built on the long wheelbase with uprated springs. In the early 1940s, it was re-bodied with the striking Shooting Brake coachwork that it still wears today, nearly 80 years hence.
Chassis 84FH reportedly contributed to the war effort while the Royal Air Force (RAF) used it to transport mechanics and tools to military aircraft in need of repair. By 1953, it was owned by Mirabel Topham, owner of the Aintree Racecourse and International Equestrian Centre near Liverpool, England. Later, the highly esteemed Aintree Motor Racing Circuit was added, and for many years the Shooting Brake served well as infield transport as well as a pace car. Considering the importance of the races staged there, including the British Grand Prix, 84FH would likely have been on hand when racing greats such as Stirling Moss took the checkered flag.
The Phantom I’s sweeping black fenders and light gray paintwork allow the natural finish of the wooden coachwork to stand out prominently. A vehicle of wonderful presence and charm, its divided interior is trimmed in smart brown leather and vinyl, accented by gloss beige paint overhead. Whatever its next assignment, this historic Rolls-Royce is sure to take to it with dedication and vigor.
